Backlink Building Playbook for Early-Stage Products

Building links early is less about volume and more about fit. Pick channels that already serve your target users and match your product’s story.

1) Start with category-fit channels

Focus on directories, communities, and launch platforms that already list similar products. You’ll get faster approvals and more relevant traffic.

Examples: Product Hunt, Indie Hackers, curated SaaS lists, and niche AI directories.

2) Build one authoritative asset

Create a resource worth referencing (benchmark, research, or a deep guide). This becomes your “linkable asset” for cold outreach and partnerships.

3) Use a repeatable submission workflow

For each channel, track:

  • Submission URL
  • Required assets (logo, copy, screenshots)
  • Status (todo → in progress → submitted → live)
  • Live backlink URL

4) Write platform-specific copy

Avoid generic one-liners. Tailor your description to the platform’s audience. Mention who the product is for and the outcome it delivers.

5) Measure outcomes, not just links

Track traffic and conversions from each channel. Some backlinks won’t drive traffic but can still improve domain authority over time.

If you want to scale this, assign one channel per day and keep the work visible in a lightweight board. Consistency wins.
